Teen Dating Violence
It’s important to know early warning signs of teen dating violence because it is a serious problem in the U.S., affecting approximately 10% of all teenagers, 12-18 years of age. It includes stalking, harassment, physical or sexual abuse.
Some red flags in a relationship include excessive jealousy and frequent lying. You should also be wary of a partner who frequently criticizes you or puts you down. Another major sign is an unwillingness to compromise — relationships shouldn’t be one-sided.
We want to equip you with the information necessary to pick up on the early warning signs of an abusive dating relationship.
Early Warning Signs
It is NEVER okay for your partner to:
- Restrict your contact with family or friends.
- Control what you look like or wear.
- Pressure you into sexual activity.
- Dictate your reproductive choices.
- Call you names or yell at you.
- Push, shove, hit, or do anything to frighten you.
Know the signs. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are worthy of respect. You are worthy of love. Never justify abuse.
If you need help, call National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-SAFE or 1-800-799-7233.
